Caprice
Choreography: William Whitener
Music: Dmitri Kabalevsky

William Whitener’s Caprice, danced to 22 of Kabalevsky’s 30 Children’s Pieces, Opus 27, portrays childhood games and the capriciousness of youth. The dance also alludes to the feelings of wonder and melancholy at childhood’s end. At its premiere in 1989, The New York Times found Whitener’s selection of Kabalevsky music to be… an inspired choice for a score, with the piano music’s balance of sweetness and spirit, with just a touch of darkness, magically reflected in Mr. Whitener’s 22 dances.
